Course Description: Foundation of Art

 1 credit (Year long)

Prerequisite: None

Foundations of Art is a lively, inviting, comprehensive course written for beginning level artists. This course includes interactive activities and multicultural studio projects representing a wide variety of cultures, artistic styles and art media. This course is designed to enrich the lives of its participants through discovery and creative problem solving. It provides students with a broader perception of their environment and cultural perspectives. The course was designed around the following key concepts:

- Meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that allow for personal growth and creative expression.

- Integration of aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and studio production.

- Sequentially planned experiences that build on concepts and provide learning opportunities that incorporate a variety of media, artistic styles, and historical periods.

Students will learn traditional and contemporary techniques in drawing, painting, clay, collage, and sculpture. In addition, students  will self-examine completed works in an effort to foster a sense of accomplishment and commitment to high standards of art production.

What does this mean?

This course is an introduction to all things art. The course, which counts as 1 credit, will last the entire school year.  I break the course up into four parts. First Marking Period - Drawing, Second Marking Period - Painting, Third Marking Period - Clay/Ceramics, Fourth Marking Period - Mixed Media. This course is good for anyone that has an interest in learning more about the arts.

During the year, students will fill out worksheets that will allow the student to evaluate their own artwork. What worked best with this piece? Where did you struggle? How would you change it? Every art piece is a learning experience so the student does better in the future. Class critiques will allow students to comment on their own and others work, along with understanding and being considerate of others viewpoints.

Each large project is worth 100 points and will be graded according to a teacher created rubric. Focus is needed to complete work during the class time given. Since many of the supplies can not be taken home, this class has very little homework, but class time must be used wisely to finish projects on time.
